Curing Strep Throat NATURALLY!

And because God thinks I'm an incredible badass, He has continued to fill my plate up with sick kids!

But this one threw me for a loop, lemme tell you.

While the boys had some nasty virus with raging fevers, hallucinations and all that jazz, Mahri somehow came down with...strep throat.

What the what?!

How in the heck did she get THAT?! We haven't had a case of strep throat in our house in....ever? I've been the only one who's ever had it...and I don't think I've had it since I was a kid.

So, besides the fact that her even having it was puzzling...was I going to have to be forced to take her to a doctor and put her on potentially dangerous antibiotics? I mean, yes, they are sometimes very important..but so many germs are becming resistant to them. And they destroy beneficial flora in your digestive system. I got an email from a friend and reader a couple of weeks ago, asking for help. She had been put on an antibiotic...which gave her such a horrendous yeast infection...it was spreading down her LEGS!!! She was covered!!! Oh my gosh!!!

So, yeah, if I could somehow avoid that for my daughter, I was going to try my hardest.

She had the telltale white patches in the back of her mouth, along with red and yellow bumps. She said that it hurt to breathe, to drink even water, to eat...everything just hurt. This was NOT good.

Of course, I went for my tried-and-true-never-lets-me-down antibiotic Garlic Honey Lemon shots:

Freshly squeezed juice from 1 lemon
1 Tbsp honey (raw is best)
1 clove fresh garlic, minced
1 Tbsp Bragg Apple Cider Vinegar
large pinch of cayenne powder

I had her drink 3 shots the first day, morning, noon and night.

She woke up the next morning feeling even worse.

This was no bueno, folks.

No bueno at all.

So I began googling...I knew that it had to be possible to cure this with God's plants. HAD to be possible. I stumbled across Beth's post on Red and Honey. She claimed that it wasn't for the faint of heart but was all but guaranteed to have strep throat gone within a day. Every commenter said that it had worked for them. I had to give it a try!

I didn't have all of the ingredients on hand, specifically the lemon herbal tea. But I figured that fresh lemon juice had to be more potent than a bagged tea. So I gave it a try. We did about 8 treatments within a few hours (about every 15-30 mins for 2 hours). After the first couple of gargles, I stopped measuring exactly and just eyeballed it, adding more where I saw fit. I also just used regular store-bought honey for most of the treatments until Antonio brought me home raw local honey that evening. I also added in turmeric (found with your spices in your grocery store). Turmeric is a great anti-inflammatory.

Juice from 1/2 lemon
1 Tbsp Bragg Apple Cider Vinegar
1 Tbsp raw honey
1/4 tsp cayenne powder
(I probably used more than that after the first few gargles)
1/4 tsp (or more) turmeric

What you do is gargle with that for as long as you can stand, getting it as far back into your throat as possible. Don't swallow it!

I'm not going to lie: when she did the first gargle, she screamed and sobbed. She said that it hurt so badly. And it tasted weird (probably the turmeric). But the rest of the gargles didn't hurt quite so badly. Which was my first tip-off that something was actually working!

After about the third gargle, I noticed that her voice was sounding better. She was not yet really noticing a difference in pain, except that she was able to gargle longer each time.

After about the 4th or 5th gargle, I checked her throat again and it actually looked like some of the swelling was going down and the white patches were shrinking.

(pic of her throat a little halfway through the process)

By evening, she was able to eat some dinner (veggie tacos minus the taco shells and cauliflower rice)

I also began brewing her some strong chamomile tea from the actual dried plant, not bagged tea. Per my mother in law's suggestion, I also put a couple of inches of chopped ginger root into the boiling mixture. Ginger, in addition to other medicinal properties, helps to reduce inflammation. Once it was done steeping, I strained out the stems, flowers and ginger chunks and added some raw honey and had her drink a large mug.

Even though she had done the required 2 hours of treatment, at bedtime, I had her do one more gargle of this, then gargle with a small spoon full of coconut oil, followed by another Garlic Lemon Honey shot, then 15 minutes later, do another cayenne mixture gargle, followed by a spoon full of coconut oil, swallowing it after a quick gargle. See, coconut oil is antibacterial, antiviral, antifungal and anti-inflammatory. And I purposefully had her swallow it as the last step at bedtime...because swallowing it would coat her throat and allow the healing to occur while she slept.
(you could probably skip the Garlic Lemon shots and coconut oil and just do the cayenne gargles...I just wanted to go full-force to ensure the death of this darned bacteria!)

By morning, she was feeling A LOT better!! Her throat, actually, felt almost as good as new. The white spots were gone!

But her throat and neck felt swollen. She was having trouble turning her head but didn't have a fever. It had to be swollen lymph nodes from fighting off this infection. Tonsils, by the way, are lymph nodes. So I went to my go-to remedy for lymph node issues

CASTOR OIL

First, I had her open her mouth, stick out her tongue ("say 'ahhhh' ") and I gently rubbed castor oil directly onto her tonsils and the back of her throat with a q-tip.

I then prepared a castor pack with an old cloth flat diaper (clean, obviously...never used as a diaper), that I wrapped around the front of her throat. (let me know if you want step-by-step instructions on how to prepare a castor pack! they are super easy, but I don't want to bore you with details here) I turned the heating pad onto high and put it on the castor pack and had her lay there with it on for about an hour.

By the end of that first castor pack, her neck felt a lot better. She was easily able to turn her head completely with no issue. She could once again touch her chin to her chest.

Yay!!

By evening, however, the back of her neck was hurting and she was having trouble turning her head. So I prepared another castor pack and put it on the back of her neck with the heating pad turned to High. I had her keep it on for two full hours.

When she took it off, her neck felt great!

She went straight to bed and when she woke up, she felt as good as new!! No sore throat, no neck pain, nada!!

Total time to cure her strep throat:

about 36 hours

******************

I'm sure this probably seems like a lot of hassle to go through, like I said, you could always just do only the gargle. But, in my opinion, it was completely worth it. Germs don't become resistant to natural remedies. This natural antibiotic treatment wasn't going to destroy her gut flora or give her any scary or dangerous side effects.

(unless, of course, you happen to be allergic to any of these ingredients, in which case, you might want to alter the "recipe" or just find another solution)

I'll admit that I was nervous about this remedy. To me, it seemed way too easy to actually cure something that so many people go running to the doctor for, believing that anitbiotics are the only thing that will work. I thought that about strep throat, too! But I don't anymore! I am so excited to have discovered this great remedy that will surely come into handy for many people!

A huge THANK YOU to Beth from Red and Honey for sharing your remedy with the world!
