The Start Of My New Life!

Today I started the South Beach Diet. I am determined to lose weight, get in shape & be healthy.

No sugar-coating it.

I am overweight & out-of-shape.

I had gestational diabetes in my third pregnancy. I have a high risk of developing full-blown diabetes because of that. Diabetes also runs in both sides of my family, which totally increases my risk.

When I was 20 I had a large lump removed from my right breast. It was benign, thank God, but that lump & the fact that my grandma has had breast cancer twice really puts me in a Danger Zone.

My mom has had cervical cancer & keeps having precancerous cells showing up.

I want to live a long, healthy & happy life. I do not want to leave my four precious chickies without a mama.

I need to get healthy.

Now.

This blog will hopefully keep me accountable when the going gets tough.

Here's a slight background of my weight situation. You have NO IDEA how hard it is to post these numbers online for the world to see.

I was a healthy weight growing up.

Then I went to work at McDonalds when I was 16. One of the "benefits" of working there: all-you-can-eat lunches. I went overboard. I'm talking: 2 Big Macs, a large fry, mayo for dipping the fries & a large Coke. For lunch. Every working day. It was ridiculous. I gained a ton of weight.

So I started popping Dexatrims like they were candy. I paid no attention to dosage recommendations. When I got hungry, I'd pop a diet pill. I lost all my McD's weight. Plus more. I quit working there but continued with the pills.

I began passing out from not eating.

My mom found the pills hidden in my dresser. She freaked out (rightfully so!) and flushed them all.

I went back to a healthy weight & stayed there for a few years. Ahhh, youth's metabolism. ;-)

When I got pregnant with my first child, I literally ate for 2. Maybe 3. And none of the food was healthy. I went from 103 lbs (I'm exactly 5' tall) to 163 lbs on Delivery Day!

I didn't own a scale at home, but my weight dropped rapidly. I went down 8 dress sizes within 3 months.

But then I got on the Depo shot for birth control.

I gained so. much. weight. Like tons. I was huge. I ballooned up to 180 lbs in a matter of a few months! And my doctors said NOTHING!!!

I went off the shot & immediately got pregnant with #2. I gained about 12 lbs with that pregnancy. I lost that 12 lbs by my 6-week post-partum doctor's appt.

I had the IUD Mirena inserted. My weight stayed the same: 180.

I had Mirena for 5 years. I immediately started using NuvaRing. The doctor's said that weight gain was not really associated with it.

My weight remained the same.

My husband & I decided to stop using all hormone/chemical birth control. We used condoms. (sorry! TMI)

I started losing weight almost right away! I was about 175 (it was a small weight loss but significant to me!). But I was pregnant with #3 within 2 months.

I gained about 25 lbs & weighed in at 200 on Delivery Day.

Yikes!

I lost 20 lbs by my 6-week visit.

But 6 months later, I was pregnant again!

I gained 20 lbs with my 4th pregnancy & lost it all by my 6 week appt.

But here I am. My youngest is 10 weeks old & I am still at 180.

Sigh.

I NEED to lose this weight. I would like to lose 65-70 lbs.

So there you have it.

All the dirty details.

I am embarrassed & ashamed.

But its time to move past my embarrassment & do something about it!!

My plan is to do Week 1 Phase 1 of the South Beach Diet...maybe even Week 2, which will complete Phase 1. But then my entire family has agreed that we would love to progressively adopt more of an organic, raw diet as our Lifestyle Diet. Meaning for the rest of our lives. We love the R3 Diet for that.

Plus exercise.

I've got a long road in front of me but I know I can do it!!

Wish me luck!
